Despite the state of the world, actress and new mom Shay Mitchell manages to find the light—and that light comes in the form of her adorable daughter, Atlas, who will be celebrating her first birthday this fall. “Focusing my energy on her feels good,” says Mitchell. “Everything is so new and exciting to her, and it’s inspiring to see things through her eyes.”

That doesn’t mean she’s ignoring the reality of the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, it has motivated her to start teaching her daughter healthy habits at a young age. “Atlas puts everything in her mouth, so we’re starting her on a frequent handwashing routine,” she says. “We sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song as we wash to make sure we cleanse thoroughly.”

Even before the pandemic, Mitchell was big on handwashing. “I always wash my hands before I leave the house, after I leave the house, and when I come home,” she says. “It’s the first thing I do, and I make everybody do it too.” And now Mitchell is partnering with hygiene brand Safeguard, which is donating $10 million to organizations such as Save the Children to promote handwashing and distribute free products to children in underserved communities. The brand’s Micellar Deep Cleansing Liquid Hand Soap (Buy It, $6, target.com) is a mainstay in her bathroom. (Psst…Here’s more about the science of micellar water.)

Mitchell says she gets a chance to focus on herself when her daughter falls asleep. She moved her treadmill into her living room so she can keep an eye on Atlas as she gets a run in. (Also watch her crush a total-body workout with trainer Kira Stokes pre-pandemic.) She also does a lot of her workouts over FaceTime with her best friends or with her grandmother in Vancouver, British Columbia (her hometown), who hasn’t been able to exercise at her senior center. “I’ve learned how to do some great chair workouts using soup cans as weights,” she says. (Does it get any cuter than that?!)

Shay Mitchell Launches A New Line Of Sparkling Tequila Canned Cocktails

“The flavors were inspired by two classic drinks,” Shay Mitchell tells PEOPLE exclusively of the Onda brand. “A lime margarita and grapefruit paloma.”

Shay Mitchell is getting into the canned cocktail business.

The actress, 33, just announced her latest business venture, Onda Sparkling Tequila, PEOPLE can exclusively confirm. The beverage comes in two flavors: lime and grapefruit. Each 12-oz. can is mixed with specially crafted tequila, sparkling water, and real fruit juice.

“The flavors were inspired by two classic drinks,” Mitchell tells PEOPLE. “A lime margarita and grapefruit paloma.”

At $39 per 8-pack, they contain 5% ABV, 100 calories, and are gluten-free with no carbs or sugar.

With her business partners Noah Gray, Max Dworin, and Kelli Adams, Mitchell set out to find a tequila distillery in Mexico to provide the alcohol for the beverages. “We visited the best distilleries in the magical town of Tequila, which is in the heart of Jalisco, Mexico,” says Mitchell. “This distillery stood out not only because it is one of the most awarded tequila distilleries in Mexico, but also because it is owned and primarily run by women.”

Shay Mitchell Partners With Safeguard’s $10 Million Initiative To Promote Handwashing

Actress, producer, entrepreneur and influencer, Shay Mitchell, is partnering with SafeGuard’s $10 million initiative to promote handwashing habits, education and product donations. The Procter & Gamble brand, Safeguard, announced a hygiene education and product donation initiative to help reach the estimated 48 million kids under the age of 12 that are reentering playgrounds, parks, recreational facilities and schools in the U.S. this month. Safeguard will donate $10 million to promote handwashing habits among kids and provide more underserved communities and families with free hygiene products through organizations including Save the Children, Americares, and Feeding America.

Partnering with Safeguard to spread awareness about the initiative along with handwashing habits was a no brainer for Mitchell. “It is so important now more than ever to instill healthy handwashing habits into our children’s routines. The truth is many children and even adults do not know how to properly wash their hands. Since the pandemic began, I have had conversations with adults on the correct way to wash your hands and many didn’t realize it is recommended to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. So if adults don’t know how to properly wash their hands, how will children know? A big part of the initiative is to teach children through some of my favorite organization like Save The Children on hygiene education. That being said when I was approached to partner with Safeguard to help spread the message it was a no brainer for me,” explained Mitchell. As a new mom Mitchell sings the “Happy Birthday” song twice (an approximate 20 seconds) while teaching her eight month old daughter proper handwashing techniques, “Even though my daughter is not even a year old, I think it’s so important to instill these handwashing habits with children from a very young age to ensure that they practice and understand hygiene health as they get older.”

A national survey among 1,000 parents conducted by Safeguard revealed nearly seven in 10 parents (68%) are concerned about their children exposing others in the household to COVID-19 because of poor hand hygiene, while half (50%) of parents are so worried about their children’s hygiene and health that they don’t plan to take their kids to parks or recreation facilities after they reopen. “We are facing one of the biggest health crises of our lifetime, and unacceptable disparities for children across America are compounded during this pandemic – making access to basic essentials including hygiene and health items out of reach for far too many children,” said Mark Shriver, Senior Vice President of U.S. Programs & Advocacy at Save the Children. “We are proud to partner with Safeguard to draw attention to these inequities and catapult change through increased access to education and essential health and hygiene products.”

Parenting Pro: Shay Mitchell Is Teaching Her Daughter To ‘Love Without Judgement’

The ‘Pretty Little Liars’ star gave birth to her daughter Atlas eight months ago, and has said she’s already started to teach the tot – whom she has with her partner Matte Babel – about activism and fighting for “change”.

She said: “We’re reading books, one of her nighttime books is ‘A Is for Activist’. We’re starting her right now because I think it’s so important to educate them at a young age so they know that truly no matter what you look like, you deserve to love and be loved without judgment, be all and end all and that’s it.

“Especially coming from a mixed family herself. I hope it’s in our generation and I really pray that it’s in hers as well that there will be a huge change and I slowly see it right now.”

Shay is also getting a head start on teaching Atlas the importance of washing her hands, especially amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

She added: “We have started already. It’s part of her nighttime routine. She’s touching everything, putting everything in her mouth, so you want to start them as early as possible. It’s part of the time she goes to bed, we’re like, ‘It’s time to wash your hands.’ I sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice over. I may or may not do a little dance, it’s a whole routine, but she’s certainly laughing the whole time, and it’s definitely something she’ll look back on, hopefully with fond memories.”

And because Atlas loves to copy her mother, the 31-year-old actress is doing what she can to set a good example.

Shay Mitchell Explains Why Getting Engaged To Matte Babel Isn’t On Her Mind Right Now (Exclusive)

Shay Mitchell is in no rush to become Mrs. Matte Babel.

The Pretty Little Liars star just gave birth to her and Babel’s daughter, Atlas, seven months ago, and now she’s enjoying this time with her family while quarantining amid the coronavirus pandemic. As for taking her relationship with the 39-year-old TV personality to the next level, Mitchell tells ET’s Katie Krause that getting engaged isn’t something she’s thinking about.

“A lot of people ask, it’s never been something I really cared for,” she says of marriage. “And I love weddings, love weddings. I can watch them all day long. I love attending, I love being a part of my friends’ [weddings], anybody’s to be quite honest. It’s just not something I care for for myself and it’s something that Matte and I have spoken about.”

Mitchell says Babel has made sure she doesn’t want a proposal from him. “He’s been like, ‘You sure?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, we work so well right now.’ It’s great and this dynamic just works for us.”

She adds, “It may not always be the correct way but it works. That’s how I sort of have to go, you know, that’s how I do it.”

While Mitchell isn’t thinking about walking down the aisle just yet, the 33-year-old actress tells ET that she’s loved watching Babel, 39, as a father.

Shay Mitchell On Why Millennial Women *Need* To Talk About Motherhood

Shay Mitchell always knew she wanted to be a mom. Before she could fully articulate what motherhood even meant, the Pretty Little Liars actor was—in the way many young girls do—mimicking it. “Ever since I was a little girl I always had my dolls lined up and loved pushing them [in a] stroller,” she says of growing up. “So when I actually did get to push a stroller, it was kind of funny.”

If you’re one of Mitchell’s 27.7 million Instagram followers, you’ve probably seen said stroller in a September 2019 video on the star’s YouTube channel. Titled “How NOT to Build a Stroller,” the four-minute vid features Mitchell’s partner, fellow Canadian Matte Babel, struggling to put together the stroller for their then-unborn baby. A very pregnant Mitchell sits to the side, bikini-clad and munching away on chips as she gives instructions. It’s a *whole* mood—and also, super relatable, because who among us wouldn’t want to lounge around, belly out and eating to our heart’s content? And it’s a side of celebs we don’t often see; with highly curated social media feeds and ultra-glam pregnancy shoots, it’s easy for normal people to feel inadequate (not to mention unglamorous) throughout their own pregnancies.

But spoiler alert: Celebs don’t always look that good. Thankfully, this relatability was a reoccurring theme throughout Mitchell’s pregnancy, as she shared videos detailing her fears around giving birth and her changing body; and it continued into her first few months of motherhood, with Mitchell sharing the realities of pumping with her followers.

Shay Mitchell Says She’s Never Felt More ”Grateful” On Her 33rd Birthday In Self-Quarantine

Shay Mitchell is making lemonade (or perhaps cake?) out of lemons on her 33rd birthday.

Much like her fellow Aries and Tauruses around the world, the Pretty Little Liars actress had to get creative and plan around the coronavirus outbreak. So she did what any celeb currently self-quarantining would do—make a TikTok!

Dressed in sweatpants, slippers and a homemade birthday hat, Shay stood outside her home and waited for cars to drive by. “It’s my 33rd birthday!” her sign read. “You honk I drink!”

The birthday girl captioned her Instagram post, “Even throughout a global pandemic, quarantine, and rain… this is the most grateful I’ve ever felt on a birthday. Stay safe, and stay home. Swipe for the tikitty tok, ticker tok, whatever they call it. #youth.”

Shay Mitchell Talked About Mom-Shaming Again, And What It’s Like To Quarantine As A New Mom

Shay Mitchell has already faced her fair share of mommy-shaming throughout her pregnancy, but as a new mother she’s totally over it. The actor has her way of dealing with internet trolls, but in a recent interview with Romper, Mitchell shared that she is done letting mom-shaming get to her. Mitchell has opened herself up to criticism by displaying the entirety of her pregnancy journey on a YouTube series and has continued to make her life public on social media. However, that doesn’t mean she deserves the kind of hate internet trolls subject her to.

Mitchell is isolating with her baby, Atlas Noa, and partner, Matte Babel. The celebrity told Romper about what it’s like to deal with the wild situation our world is in while also being a new mother.
