Between acting, modeling, and being an entrepreneur, Shay Mitchell has built up quite the resume for herself. Most recently, she starred in popular shows like You and Dollface whilst simultaneously launching her own travel brand, Beis. But despite everything she’s done thus far, Mitchell is often remembered for her first acting role, Emily Fields in the hit Freeform show, Pretty Little Liars.

For seven years, Mitchell played the role of Emily on Pretty Little Liars. A teen drama, the show followed four friends as they coped with the disappearance of their friend and being terrorized by an anonymous stalker. The show effectively made Mitchell and her co-stars household names. In fact, Pretty Little Liars was Mitchell’s big break. Prior to landing the role of Emily, she’d only had one other cameo in Degrassi: The Next Generation.

How Shay Mitchell first learned about ‘Pretty Little Liars’

But just how did Mitchell end up joining the cast of Pretty Little Liars? In a YouTube video, the You actor shared that when she first met her manager she was asked what type of shows she was interested in. At the time, Mitchell was absolutely obsessed with Gossip Girl and Vampire Diaries and wanted to be on a show with a similar tone. When her manager sent her the pilot for Pretty Little Liars, she was plenty excited, but she didn’t have that much time to prepare. With only a day to memorize and record her audition, she ended up preparing for her audition in a very unusual way.

Despite the state of the world, actress and new mom Shay Mitchell manages to find the light—and that light comes in the form of her adorable daughter, Atlas, who will be celebrating her first birthday this fall. “Focusing my energy on her feels good,” says Mitchell. “Everything is so new and exciting to her, and it’s inspiring to see things through her eyes.”

That doesn’t mean she’s ignoring the reality of the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, it has motivated her to start teaching her daughter healthy habits at a young age. “Atlas puts everything in her mouth, so we’re starting her on a frequent handwashing routine,” she says. “We sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song as we wash to make sure we cleanse thoroughly.”

Even before the pandemic, Mitchell was big on handwashing. “I always wash my hands before I leave the house, after I leave the house, and when I come home,” she says. “It’s the first thing I do, and I make everybody do it too.” And now Mitchell is partnering with hygiene brand Safeguard, which is donating $10 million to organizations such as Save the Children to promote handwashing and distribute free products to children in underserved communities. The brand’s Micellar Deep Cleansing Liquid Hand Soap (Buy It, $6, target.com) is a mainstay in her bathroom. (Psst…Here’s more about the science of micellar water.)

Mitchell says she gets a chance to focus on herself when her daughter falls asleep. She moved her treadmill into her living room so she can keep an eye on Atlas as she gets a run in. (Also watch her crush a total-body workout with trainer Kira Stokes pre-pandemic.) She also does a lot of her workouts over FaceTime with her best friends or with her grandmother in Vancouver, British Columbia (her hometown), who hasn’t been able to exercise at her senior center. “I’ve learned how to do some great chair workouts using soup cans as weights,” she says. (Does it get any cuter than that?!)

“The flavors were inspired by two classic drinks,” Shay Mitchell tells PEOPLE exclusively of the Onda brand. “A lime margarita and grapefruit paloma.”

Shay Mitchell is getting into the canned cocktail business.

The actress, 33, just announced her latest business venture, Onda Sparkling Tequila, PEOPLE can exclusively confirm. The beverage comes in two flavors: lime and grapefruit. Each 12-oz. can is mixed with specially crafted tequila, sparkling water, and real fruit juice.

“The flavors were inspired by two classic drinks,” Mitchell tells PEOPLE. “A lime margarita and grapefruit paloma.”

At $39 per 8-pack, they contain 5% ABV, 100 calories, and are gluten-free with no carbs or sugar.

With her business partners Noah Gray, Max Dworin, and Kelli Adams, Mitchell set out to find a tequila distillery in Mexico to provide the alcohol for the beverages. “We visited the best distilleries in the magical town of Tequila, which is in the heart of Jalisco, Mexico,” says Mitchell. “This distillery stood out not only because it is one of the most awarded tequila distilleries in Mexico, but also because it is owned and primarily run by women.”

Actress, producer, entrepreneur and influencer, Shay Mitchell, is partnering with SafeGuard’s $10 million initiative to promote handwashing habits, education and product donations. The Procter & Gamble brand, Safeguard, announced a hygiene education and product donation initiative to help reach the estimated 48 million kids under the age of 12 that are reentering playgrounds, parks, recreational facilities and schools in the U.S. this month. Safeguard will donate $10 million to promote handwashing habits among kids and provide more underserved communities and families with free hygiene products through organizations including Save the Children, Americares, and Feeding America.

Partnering with Safeguard to spread awareness about the initiative along with handwashing habits was a no brainer for Mitchell. “It is so important now more than ever to instill healthy handwashing habits into our children’s routines. The truth is many children and even adults do not know how to properly wash their hands. Since the pandemic began, I have had conversations with adults on the correct way to wash your hands and many didn’t realize it is recommended to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. So if adults don’t know how to properly wash their hands, how will children know? A big part of the initiative is to teach children through some of my favorite organization like Save The Children on hygiene education. That being said when I was approached to partner with Safeguard to help spread the message it was a no brainer for me,” explained Mitchell. As a new mom Mitchell sings the “Happy Birthday” song twice (an approximate 20 seconds) while teaching her eight month old daughter proper handwashing techniques, “Even though my daughter is not even a year old, I think it’s so important to instill these handwashing habits with children from a very young age to ensure that they practice and understand hygiene health as they get older.”

A national survey among 1,000 parents conducted by Safeguard revealed nearly seven in 10 parents (68%) are concerned about their children exposing others in the household to COVID-19 because of poor hand hygiene, while half (50%) of parents are so worried about their children’s hygiene and health that they don’t plan to take their kids to parks or recreation facilities after they reopen. “We are facing one of the biggest health crises of our lifetime, and unacceptable disparities for children across America are compounded during this pandemic – making access to basic essentials including hygiene and health items out of reach for far too many children,” said Mark Shriver, Senior Vice President of U.S. Programs & Advocacy at Save the Children. “We are proud to partner with Safeguard to draw attention to these inequities and catapult change through increased access to education and essential health and hygiene products.”
